Order a cappuccino at four in the afternoon in Rome and you may get a raised eyebrow. In Italy the drink belongs to the morning.
The reason is not law. It is habit, built over generations.
The logic
Milk is food. A cappuccino counts as part of breakfast. After a big lunch, hot milk feels heavy. Many Italians say it disturbs digestion.
After a meal, people drink a small espresso instead. It is quick and light. It marks the end of the meal.
The bar ritual
Italian coffee bars are built for speed. You stand at the counter. You pay at the till first, then hand your receipt over. You drink in two minutes.
A long milky drink does not fit that rhythm.
In Italy, coffee is a pause, not a project.
The rule is bending
Tourists order cappuccinos all day. Bars serve them without comment. Younger Italians also order them later, especially in cities.
Still, the old rule lingers. If you want to blend in, drink an espresso after lunch.
A small guide
Morning: cappuccino or a caffè latte. After lunch: espresso. Evening: espresso, or something stronger.
